The Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana palm) is endemic to Lord Howe island. When flying boats opened up tourism between Sydney and Lord Howe island last century, visitors brought home seeds and planted them or gave them as gifts to family and friends. Over the years the Howea forsteriana palm became recognized as part of Sydney's palmscape.

Kentia palms are tall and slender, known for their elegant fronds – an excellent choice of palm to create a subtropical environment. Uniquely adapted to the habitat of Lord Howe island, Howea forsteriana palms are extremely salt and wind-tolerant and therefore ideal for coastal planting. An extremely robust palm, kentias can also tolerate mild frosts.
